My 2 year old Golden retriever gave birth to six pups. iam planning to raise one of the male pup?
I kept a male pup from my last litter who is now 11 months old and I have been to hell and back for the last two weeks trying to keep him apart from his sister and cousin who came on heat together.

Because I show my dogs I tend not to have them neutered too early because to show a male dog they must not be castrated.

I had to send my male to Kennels, against my better judgement, because it just was not fair to keep him here with the females on heat. He completely changed his character and the only thing on his mind was to get to the girls, naturally. I can't wait to get him back!

Unless you are prepared to have either your female spayed or your male dog neutered when he reaches maturity, you are going to go through a lot of stress when his mother is on heat as he will mate with her without a doubt, if given the chance.

It definitely is not advisable for the pup to mate with his mother. This is called line breeding and you have to be a very experienced breeder to even contemplate such a thing as you could encounter a lot of problems with recurring genes etc.

You will have no problems if you do the responsible thing and have either one spayed or neutered.

Good luck with your decision.
Reply:I've a beautiful (smaller sized) female AKC pedigree, 1yo. She has such a beautiful face and wonderful gentle character. I am debating of spaying as I want to find a mate for her. Is there any male or how do I find a mate for my dog? Anyone with offers/advices, please contact sad_an6el@hotmail.com Report Abuse

Reply:The risks are very high they will mate when she goes into heat and he is old enough to mate with her. Unless you have a way to keep them totally seperated or have her spayed this is not a advisable thing to do!

Mom's dont see their pups as theirs once they are older and will sometime not want the pup around them at all. To think they will just get along is just not so either. If you do keep one male then I strongly suggest you have him nutered ASAP!

You need to be not only totally aware of him but her also.

Males are capable to mate at 6 months old so my suggestion to you is not to keep a pup at all.
Reply:You do not want them to mate. Get them both fixed and they will live long and happy lives together as buddies.
Reply:Why did you breed her in the first place? Is she the best specimen of the breed, adheres to breed conformation standards, had OFA/CERF certs done (couldn't have since she's only 2 and you can't get health certs til at least 2 years of age - so you bred a possibly UNHEALTHY dog), show champion or ch in her pedigree, good temperament?

Yes they could mate so you'd better spay the female and neuter the male.
Reply:I have 2 pits, I have the mom and she had 7 pups, I kept one male puppy he is now 5 mos, and I have an appointment to get him fixed next month. His pee pee thingy is already sticking out, cuz mom's in heat... never let them mate.. that would be one messedup litter.... They play real good together, they tend to play a lil rougher at times, maybe cuz she's training him, but I have to break that up... I think you'll be just fine make sure that you get him fixed asap
Reply:You don't want inbreeding or a dominance problem id Spay and neuter to prevent future problems
Reply:It is not a "risk" that they will mate, it is a positive given if you do not spay the mother and neuter the male pup.

You are well on your way to being a back yard breeder who breeds anything together - scary.

Get those dogs fixed asap. Hope you have good, checked out homes waiting for those poor pups ===
Reply:yes they will breed..you either need to have one altered or you have to make sure they are apart when the female is in heat...you really should get her spayed
